You Don't Need to Be an Influencer
A Simple Approach to Social Media for Small Business
If the words “you need to post more on social media” make you want to close the app altogether, you're not alone.

For many small business owners, social media can feel like one more job you're somehow supposed to know how to do.
Reels. Stories. Hashtags. Algorithms. Trending audio.
Here's the good news:
You don't need to master all of it.
For a local business, social media doesn't have to be about going viral or gaining thousands of followers. It's about giving people a reason to remember you, trust you, and think of your business when they need what you offer.
So, What Should You Post?
Start with what you already know.
1. Answer a Question
Think about the questions customers ask you all the time.
“Do I need an appointment?”
“How long does this take?”
“What's the difference between these two options?”
“Do you service my area?”
Each one is a social media post. If one customer asked, chances are someone else is wondering the same thing.
2. Show What You Do
You don't need a professional photo shoot.
Take a picture of a project you're working on, a new product that arrived, your workspace, your team, or something interesting that happened during your day. Then explain what we're looking at.
People enjoy seeing the business behind the business.
3. Teach Us Something Small
You're an expert at things your customers aren't.
An insurance agent might share one document people should save.
A landscaper could explain why a lawn develops brown patches.
A realtor could explain a term buyers frequently misunderstand.
Don't try to teach everything you know. Teach one small thing.
4. Introduce the People
Small businesses have something large companies spend millions trying to manufacture: A personality.
Show the owner.
Introduce an employee.
Celebrate an anniversary.
Share why you started the business.
People like doing business with people they know.
5. Talk About What's Happening Here
You're a local business—use that to your advantage.
Share a community event.
Congratulate another local business.
Post a photo from around town.
Talk about something good happening in our local communities.
Not every post has to sell something. In fact, it shouldn't.
What If Nobody Likes It?
Post it anyway.
One of the biggest mistakes small businesses make is judging every post by the number of likes it receives. Someone can see your post, never click “like,” and remember your name three months later when they need exactly what you do.
That's still marketing.
Keep It Simple
The next time you don't know what to post, choose just one:
Answer.
Show.
Teach.
Introduce.
Connect.
That's enough. You don't need perfect graphics. You don't need professional videos. And you certainly don't need to dance in front of your phone. You just need to remind your community that you're here—and give them an occasional reason to remember what you do.
Start there.
